The Wisconsin Highway Research Program
Madison, WI

Provided geotechnical engineering services for a state-wide research project to determine how variables such as grain size distribution, particle angularity, regional geology and aggregate type influence the load carrying capabilities of crushed aggregate base course (CABC) throughout the state.

OMNNI’s engineers and geotechnical experts studied and tested the different CABCs and determined the ability of each to provide pavement support. Findings were incorporated into the Wisconsin Department of Transportation pavement design process, which allows pavement designers to better predict the load carrying capabilities of the CABC layer thereby maximizing roadway quality and economy.

WisDOT Aggregate Quality Testing

Aggregate producers are required by WisDOT to have their sources tested at required intervals by a laboratory that has been qualified by WisDOT for aggregate source quality testing.

OMNNI’s laboratory is qualified by WisDOT to perform aggregate source quality testing and is staffed by HTCP Certified Aggregate Testing Technicians. Our laboratory is AASHTO accredited and provides a wide range of aggregate testing using current ASTM, AASHTO or WisDOT testing standards and specifications.

OMNNI has provided the following tests:
  • LA Wear (AASHTO T96)
  • Sodium Sulfate Soundness (AASHTO T104)
  • Freeze/Thaw Soundness (AASHTO T103)
  • Lightweight Pieces (AASHTO T191)
  • Coarse Aggregate Specific Gravity & Absorption (AASHTO T85)
  • Fracture (WisDOT CMM 13.9)
  • Liquid Limit (AASHTO T89)
  • Plasticity (AASHTO T90)
